TANGIER, MOROCCO
The theme of this first edition, “The Call of the Open Sea,” pays tribute to this city turned toward the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, evoking an openness to otherness and to travel since antiquity. It also underlines the enduring cultural pull of Tangier, as Tahar Ben Jelloun recalls: “Photo Tanger, the first international festival of the image, does justice to the city and its histories. Photography exhibitions, film screenings at the Ciné Alcazar, dear to my memory. Tangier will join the celebration, reconnecting with its traditional openness to the open sea.”
Through the creation of Photo Tanger, this international festival of the image aims to contribute culturally to the momentum animating the city of the strait, reconnecting with its rich photographic heritage and drawing out contemporary visual practices and their creative evolutions.
The first edition of Photo Tanger came about through a collective mobilisation, bringing public and private partners together around a shared conviction: to make art accessible to as many people as possible and to make culture a genuine lever of development, sharing and influence for Tangier. The festival benefits from the valuable support of major institutional partners such as the Wilaya of Tangier, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Communication, the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad, the National Foundation of Museums and Port Tanger Medina.
